Anmaral Lore and Darin's History

Darin's world is standard high fantasy. Ready for some lore? Alright, here we go. At the dawn of creation, a war was sparked between the forces of good and evil. The forces of good consisted of The Celestials; heavenly beings that sought to bring order and duty to the cosmos. The forces of evil were comprised of the Archfiends; a clan of warriors and monsters that sought chaos and discord. The two forces waged war for eons with no end in sight. Finally, The leaders of the Celestials and the Archfiends met in conference to try and settle this war once and for all. The seven most powerful of the Celestials and the seven most powerful of the Archfiends came together and decided that if the war could not be decided between them, then they would create beings that could decide the war for them. A world was born, and on it humanity was created. The stipulation was that humanity had a time limit: If, after five thousand years, humanity didn't outright obliterate itself, then the Celestials would be deemed the winner. If humanity waged enough war on itself and wiped itself off of the face of the planet, the Archfiends would be declared the winner. The stakes? Utter control over this universe while the loser was banished forever. Never let it be said that heavenly beings don't play for keeps.

With the world of Anmaral created, the Celestials and the Archfiends left this dimension. But before doing so, two moons were created to orbit the world of Anmaral, one white, linked to the realm of the Celestials, and one red, linked to the realm of the Archfiends. This way, they could monitor the people of Anmaral (and each other) to see how their little thought experiment would play out. This is the story of how Anmaral and its many diverse people came to be. It's the generally accepted lore, but most don't realize that this is the truth.

Fast forward four thousand, nine hundred seventy five years later. Humanity hasn't yet wiped itself off the map, and while wars have come and gone (what civilization do you know that hasn't fought at least one war in their lifetime?) humanity continues to stick around. In fact, they've thrived. This made the Archfiends quite nervous, they were a scant twenty five years away from the deadline of this little game and unless a major, world encompassing war broke out, they were going to be banished forever. The most powerful of the Archfiends, Diomuhr, grew desperate. He decided that the only way to end this contest in his favor was to directly incite a war among the humans. He couldn't just show up in Anmaral, though. The Celestials would be on him in an instant. Instead, he used magic to have his soul reborn into a human child. Once he was of age, he'd be strong enough to single handedly wipe out humanity, all in the guise of a human! Not technically against the rules, after all.

There was a problem though, no human child could contain that level of power without basically exploding on the spot. Diomuhr's soul had to be split into two and tethered to the souls of two twin boys. The result? Two brothers with above-human strength and resilience, being born with absolutely no idea what they were born into the world to accomplish. Darin and Dromas Altway.

Five years passed since Darin and Dromas were born. Their mother, Seren Altway, unfortunately died during childbirth. This left Darin and Dromas to be raised by their father, Dracer, in their seaside hometown of Kenmore. Both Darin and Dromas learned early on that they were different from other children. Dromas was naturally stronger, stronger than a five year old should be, and Darin was far more resilient than any five year old had any right to be. Dromas would often tell Darin that they were different, that they shouldn't be held to the standards of the other 'normal' children. Darin, on the other hand, was timid. He was often in Dromas' shadow and was content to just be a normal little boy. Meanwhile, back in the Archfiend realm, Diomurh's forces were unsettled. It seemed like Diomurh's plan was an utter failure; Darin and Dromas had no idea who they were supposed to be and what they were supposed to do! It was the perfect time for Diomurh's second in command, Belsur, to use the unrest in the Archfiend clan to take control in Diomurh's absence. He quickly usurped power, and convinced the rest of the Archfiends to follow him, for he had a better plan. He was going to send agents down to Anmaral to kill Darin and Dromas, then take custody of their souls. He would bring them back to the Archfiend realm and condition and train them for twenty years, then release them upon Anmaral just before the five thousand year deadline. Technically, they would still be human, and if the Celestials got wind, he would just say the agents he sent down escaped of their own volition and were summarily dealt with. Pretty good plan, right? It was good enough for the rest of the Archfiends, so it was set into motion.

Which is why, one night, Darin's house was attacked by two Archfiends. Dracer fought admirably, but was ultimately struck down in front of his sons. Dromas, the more bold of the twins, attempted to fight, but he was only five years old and was also easily cut down in front of Darin. Terrified, Darin turned to escape, but one of the Archfiend's swords struck him from behind. He was brought down, a deep gash going from the back of his neck to his left hip. Believing their work done, the Archfiends were preparing to return to their realm with the boys' souls in tow, when two Celestials arrived on the scene. After a brief skirmish, the Archfiends were dispatched. The Celestials, after checking to make sure there were no other Archfiends lurking, left for their own realm, neither side realizing that Darin had survived. His heightened resilience made the wound, while dire, much less fatal than intended, and he had seen the entire event. Fortunately, the sounds of the skirmish brought some of the people of Kenmore to the house where Darin was found and summarily taken care of. He was later adopted by the town's blacksmith, Acteon Demo, and raised as his own son. Meanwhile, Dromas' soul was collected by Belsur himself, and brought back to the Archfiend realm, where it would spend the next twenty years being broken and molded into something still useful to Belsur's ambition.

Nineteen years pass, and Darin has grown into a kind, outgoing, hard-working young man. He's mastered the blacksmith trade, and works side by side with his old, adoptive father, and together their wares are used throughout the kingdom. The five thousand year time limit is only months away from arriving, and the world is in a bit of a tizzy. Not because they have any idea about what's transpiring outside of their realm, but because for the first time ever, both moons are going to align. However, the more fanatical of the populace have taken to calling the upcoming event a prophecy of the end times, dubbing the alignment of the moons 'The Demon's Eye.' Cults have sprung up, relations between kingdoms are unusually tense, and Darin honestly wants none of it. He's perfectly content to living out his life in peaceful Kenmore, creating some of the most high quality wares possible. He, of course, still remembers what he saw that fateful day, but he chooses to keep quiet about it. After all, who would believe him? It's not like he could do anything anyway.

One day, news hits Kenmore of an ambassador from a neighboring kingdom visiting the nearby capital of Alvale. Darin convinces his father that this would be a great time to take a trip with some of their best wares in hopes of selling some to some visiting soldiers. Maybe this could lead to expanding their business beyond their borders, he explains. Upon arriving in Alvale, they get to work peddling their wares at the town bazaar. Suffice to say, they make a killing, and Darin celebrates the only way he knows how: getting plastered at his favorite tavern. His father, the responsible man that he is, loads his drunk son into their cart and begins their trek back to Kenmore. Little do they both know that another killing was taking place. The visiting ambassador was just discovered in his chambers, brutally murdered. The good news was that the attendant that found the body saw the culprit, clear as day. The bad news? It was Darin. Or at least someone who looked exactly like Darin.

The following day, on the road back to Kenmore, Acteon and Darin were headed off by soldiers from Alvale. Despite Darin's protests that he was innocent and Acteon saying he was with his son at the time of the killing, the fact that Darin was described perfectly at the scene of the crime forced them to place Darin under arrest. Acteon, in a fit, fought off the soldiers and freed Darin, proclaiming to his son that he had to leave and clear his name. Darin knew that Acteon would be arrested for aiding a fugitive, but Acteon spurred him on. "If you're that worried about me, then get along and clear both of our names." With that, he gave Darin his smithy hammer and an exquisitely crafted dao, and sent him on his way. Thus began Darin's journey to clear his name.

Luckily, Darin still had some allies among the guards of the capital, and an old friend found him in the tavern of a small town not far from the capital. His friend, an old guard captain named Kessler, gave him some information. The true murderer was seen leaving Alvale through the Western gate, while Darin and Acteon had left to return to Kenmore through the Eastern gate. With this, Darin spent the following weeks tracking the true murderer. Naturally, being the helpful sort, he got mixed up in some smaller adventures along the way; helping a small town deal with an influx of monsters, using his newfound notoriety as a murderer to strongarm a corrupt duke into lowering the taxes on the town he owned, and picking up a young fortune telling and spellcasting companion by the name of Iris Glavan who was so interested by the fact that she couldn't properly predict Darin's fortune that she felt compelled to follow him in his journey.

Finally, the trail lead Darin and Iris to a small city on the country's border called Uyreka. What was truly eerie about this town was that, while it was supposed to be a bustling border-city, the entire populace was simply gone. A city of thousands now devoid of life, save for the odd monster roaming and scavenging for food. It was here that Darin and Iris was confronted by a hooded figure who readily admitted to being the reason why the people of Uyreka were missing; he had simply killed them all. Darin, who didn't want anymore deaths attributed to his name, attacked the cloaked man. Despite holding his own, the cloaked man was far stronger than Darin had anticipated, easily matching Darin's heightened strength and abilities, if not outright overpowering him. Iris, seeing an opening in the fight, cast a fire spell, setting the stranger's cloak alight, forcing him to discard it. Who was this masked man?

It was Dromas.

Darin froze. He had seen Dromas get cut down nineteen years ago, how the hell could he be here? Enraged, Darin demanded to know who Dromas really was, and why he was using his brother's likeness. Dromas, amused, decided to fill Darin in on everything. While Darin had spent the last nineteen years growing soft, and living a happy, peaceful life, Dromas was being broken day after day, pushed to the brink and beyond by the Archfiends, being raised as a living weapon by Belsur himself. Finally, Belsur released him upon Anmaral. His mission? Wipe out as much as he could. Spur the various kingdoms and countries into an all out war. Obliterate humanity. All before the Demon's Eye appeared in the sky. Darin, confused or perhaps trying to mentally convince himself that he wasn't involved in any of this, tried to poke holes in Dromas' story, to which Dromas scoffed.

"All this time and you still refuse to believe who and what you are?"

Darin fell silent, unable to answer. He knew what he was, was just never forced to come to terms with it.

"You're one half of the end of the world, Darin. You and I? We were born to end it all. We're Archfiends in human skin. I always told you we were better than everyone else, and here I am. 'Living' proof."

Now, in front of Iris, Darin confronted everything he was terrified of truly becoming. Dromas was his antithesis. Dromas was alive, and he was proof that he was inextricably linked to a world-ending power.

Seeing that he had finally gotten through to his brother, Dromas sneered and bid them adieu. He left Darin with his next destination, the capital of a neighboring country, and his next target: Their entire royal family. He was going to start a war and use Darin's likeness as the catalyst. With that, he parted with some final words to his brother.

"Follow me, if you want. In fact, I wish you would. It's been so long since we played together, Darin. I'd love to see you wield that power you've spent so long hiding from this miserable world."

With that, Dromas sets out, leaving Darin with more than enough unwanted answers to his questions, and a decision to make: What was he going to do now?

PERSONALITY: Darin, as a child, was very timid and shy. Dromas' constant prodding that th two of them were 'different and therefore better' always made Darin shrink back. He never wanted to be different. He never wanted to be better. He wanted to live a peaceful life. Unfortunately, choices and events that were out of his control forced Darin to grow up a little quicker than most. After the loss of his brother and father, Darin began acting first and thinking after. This was in an attempt to fill the void Dromas' left behind. He remembers vividly how Dromas tried to fight while Darin tried to run. He always believed that he let Dromas down, let him die alone when they could have died together. As such, Darin grew up a little more impetuous than he would have otherwise. He often acts and speaks before thinking, finding it better to ask for permission rather than forgiveness. This, of course, lands Darin in plenty of trouble during his formative years.

Thanks to Acteon taking him in, he's inherited a strong sense of duty. Despite constantly complaining about 'wanting a quiet life' he still goes out of his way to help anyone he can. In fact, the wives of all the fishermen and tradesmen in Kenmore love him because when their husbands are out at sea fishing, or on the road peddling their wares, he's usually there to help do chores. This, naturally, leads to rewards in form of food. Lots and lots of food. In fact, Darin and Acteon never went hungry thanks to Darin's efforts. It's this sense of duty and helpfulness that aids Darin along his journey tracking down Dromas. By the time most people realize that he's wanted, he's already done so much to prove that he couldn't possibly be a murderer, that the people he helps offer him places to stay while on the road.

Darin is also pretty ignorant about the world at large. He's never left Kenmore unless it was to go to Alvale with Acteon, and as such, he's pretty innocent and naive when it comes to the way the world works. He can be tricked pretty easily, but he's not stupid. In fact, he's very observant and quick with a comment (again, talk first, think later) which could easily land him in further trouble. However, once he sets out on his adventure, he starts to learn the ways of the world. He's still susceptible to bouts of child-like wonder, but on the whole, he's just a young man trying to clear his name so he can lead a peaceful life.

However, after meeting Dromas, he's forced to come to terms with what he is. He's different. He has a power lying dormant inside of him, and no idea what it could do or what it means for himself and those around him. He's not expressly human, but he's not an Archfiend like Dromas claims to be. No, at this point, he needs to decide what his place in the world is. Once Dromas departs, he's forced to explain his story to Iris, who asks him a simple question: "What do you want to do now?"

Darin knew what he wanted, but admitting as much would mean the end of his quiet life. Finally, with some prodding from Iris, he decides.

He's going to stop Dromas. He's going to learn how to use the power inside of him and stop Dromas and the Archfiends. He's going to be different, and it'll be the first time that he can say so proudly.
