CHARACTER INFO
Character: Darin Altway
Canon: Original Character
Age: 24
Background Information: Darin's world is one of high fantasy and magic with some industrial revolution/steampunk thrown into the mix. Darin Altway, son of Dracer and Seren Altway was born under unusual circumstances. He and his twin brother, Dromas, are two halves of an Archfiend God of Destruction Diomuhr, prophesied to destroy the world. Because of their power, sadly, Seren did not survive the birth and five years later, Dracer and Dromas would meet a tragic end when agents from the Celestial Realm were sent to destroy the reincarnated Diomuhr. Darin survived only barely by hiding under the bodies of his family, but was left an orphan.
He was bounced around from home to home for about a year after that; no one wanted him due to rumors spreading that he was cursed. That he was the reason his family died and that if anyone took him in, they would meet a similar fate. Fortunately, he was eventually taken in by a smith named Acteon, he believed that such rumors about curses were bunk, and he happily cared for Darin well into his adult life. Darin showed remarkable aptitude for smithing from an early age and became Acteon's apprentice as a teenager. At the age of 22, he became the youngest member of the Smithing Guild to earn the rank of Master; a title he brandishes with incredible pride.
At the age of 24, he was framed for the murder of a noble and set forth on a journey to clear his name. He left his hometown of Kenmore and followed clues westward, helping people who were being beset upon by monsters in standard JRPG fare. Eventually, however, he managed to track down the one who'd framed him; his brother Dromas, seemingly back from the dead, was hellbent on not only making Darin's life miserable, but was determined to fulfill the prophecy to end the world. A prophecy that Darin, up until this point, had no idea existed, let alone knew he was a part of. Being no match for Dromas, Darin was dispatched easily but was left alive, with Dromas swearing he wasn't done trying to convince his brother that this world had no right to be saved. His parting message to Darin was to continue to chase him. To grow stronger so that one day, they could rise together as the cataclysm that destroys their world.
Personality: 1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
- Darin is a loud, boisterous, hot-blooded man of your standard Shounen/JRPG fair. His first impressions are usually terrible as he tends to look without leaping and speak without thinking, but underneath all of that bravado and brashness is a good man with a lot of insight and charisma, a heart of gold, and a near bottomless wealth of emotional trauma and self-doubt. He may complain about doing the right thing, but he's always the first to lend a hand when push comes to shove and as a Master Blacksmith prefers to act in a more support role so that he can properly hide his incredible powers. He's definitely a 'big brother' type and due to his experience as a tradesman, can easily steal the spotlight, whether he means to or not.
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
- Darin's primary focus is hiding who and what he is. He was born with half the soul of a demonic god of destruction tethered to his own, which grants him incredible strength and resilience as well as some magical powers that he doesn't know that he has at his point in canon. He's spent his life hiding his ability and would honestly just like to live a peaceful life as a smith. Unfortunately, destiny has other plans and he's had to set off on a journey to clear his name after being framed for murder. In doing so, he gets embroiled in a prophecy that states that he and his brother, who was presumed dead, are destined to destroy his world. This prophecy makes him even more reluctant to use his abilities, but when it comes between saving someone or saving his own skin or reputation, Darin will always choose the former.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
- Because of the nature of his birth and his role in the prophecy of his world, Darin lost his mother in childbirth, and his father and brother were killed by fiends, which he only survived due to his superhuman resilience and the fact that he hid under the corpses of his family. Because of that event, the townspeople in his hometown branded him as cursed, and he was an orphan for some time before finally being adopted by a great smith named Acteon. Sadly, his complex about his powers coupled with a lifetime of being branded 'cursed' and called a monster has left him with some very deep emotional trauma. Despite the mask he wears and his boisterous, kind attitude, Darin does not believe he is worth anything. In fact, if he's away from his world, he believes it's for the best for everyone. He believes that no one would miss him and that everyone is better off if he stays wherever he's brought to. Beyond that, he routinely acts without thinking of the consequences and is prone to being easily manipulated by virtue of his people pleasing attitude he's cultivated so that people actually like him.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Darin has spent his entire life watching people so that he can appear more 'normal' to hide his incredible strength. As such, he's incredibly insightful when it comes to body language and he can often read people without really meaning to. He's spent his teens and young adult life training with a friend of his late father's so that his physique also matches his strength somewhat. He's gone to great lengths to hide his powers but he refuses to dye his deep blue hair, as he's turned it into a sort of brand, despite no normal humans in his world having such vibrant and odd colored hair.
Abilities & Inventory: Darin has superhuman strength and resilience as well as transmutation magic. He's spent his life learning to control and regulate his strength, but there are several drawbacks. The first being that his still human body can destroy itself from the strain of using too much strength too quickly. If he throws a punch at maximum strength, he'd blow his arm clean off since he spent his life hiding it rather than honing it. His resilience allows him to tank a lot more damage than most...but he's still largely human. He can be killed but he does heal faster than most. Small cuts and burns tend to heal rapidly while larger, more grievous wounds still take an appropriate time to heal...he would just stabilize quicker. He can take a lot of punishment and often does. As for the transmutation magic...he doesn't even know he has it and, likely, won't even become a factor for a long time and under serious duress. As for inventory, his smithing hammer and his dao would be all the equipment he'd be bringing.

ARMADA SELECTION
He could fit on both! - Darin would likely hate the idea of being with the Corsairs, as he does not condone piracy, but the Paladins operate too rigidly within the law for Darin's liking. He has a severe problem with authority as his kingdom has a pretty rigid caste system. With the Corsairs, he's more free to operate as he pleases and the way he sees it, he doesn't have to be a pirate. In fact, he's likely charismatic enough to deter blatant piracy and quietly offer solutions that would not only help fellow Corsairs but would keep them from creating too many problems. As a Paladin, however, he could create a stir in the line of command but it might also help him realize that he has the heart of a hero. It would take some doing to get him to recognize it, but if the right people motivate him and help him see that there's more to him than the monster he perceives himself to be, he could do great things!
